Training
Dr. Milligan received his medical degree from the University of
Wisconsin in 1967. He graduated in the upper one-third of his class.
After medical school, he spent his surgical residency at the Santa
Barbara Cottage and General Hospitals and his urology residency at
the Ohio State University Hospital in Columbus. He founded Alpena
Urology in 1977.
Advanced
professional study
Dr. Milligan continues to expand on his training by taking
professional training courses in the latest urological methods.
Areas of study include: Impotence, prostate enlargement, prostate
cancer, overactive bladder, vasectomies, kidney stones, urodynamics,
biofeedback, male and female incontinence, urinary tract cancer,
pediatric urology.

Certifications
Dr. Milligan is certified by the American Board of Urology and he is
a Diplomat of the National Board of Medical Examiners, both of which
are only awarded for extensive work and understanding of urology and
urological surgery.
Community
involvements
Some of Dr. Milligan's wider interests are evident in his many other
activities. In his free time, Dr. Milligan is a volunteer for the
Multiple Sclerosis Support Group for incontinence, and he was
instrumental in starting a "Prostate Cancer Awareness
Week" in the Alpena area. He also serves as a community
lecturer for child bed-wetting (enuresis) and T.O.P.S. for
urological problems, as well as being a sponsor of the "Bladder
Health Awareness Week". Dr. Milligan is an active member of the
First Congregational Church, and enjoys bicycling, horsemanship,
sailing, and playing the trumpet.

Richard J. Milligan, M.D. maintains memberships in both regional and
national medical societies including the American Urological
Association, the American Medical Association, the Michigan State
Medical Society, and the Alpena County Medical Society.
